For every goal scored by THW star Patrick Wiencek in the current season of Germany’s top handball division, star petrol stations are donating 50 euros to the children’s cancer ward at the Schleswig-Holstein University Medical Centre. The campaign is set to continue next season, when the amount donated to the children will double to 100 euros per goal.
Goals scored in the 2012/2013 season by star petrol stations’ adopted player in Germany’s top handball division count twice over. Alongside the THW Kiel fans, the Kinderkrebshilfe children’s cancer charity also has reason to celebrate every time Patrick Wiencek scores. The handball star has so far scored 28 goals for the Kiel-based team, which equates to a donation total of 1,400 euros. During half-time at the THW home game on 14 May, star petrol stations announced it was rounding up the amount to 2,500 euros. And it was on the court at the Sparkassen-Arena-Kiel that the donation cheque was handed over to representatives of the children’s cancer ward at the Schleswig-Holstein University Medical Centre, Kiel Campus.
“This is something very close to our hearts, so it was our pleasure to give a donation to the frontline battle against cancer. Since we can see how much good the player partnership has done, we have decided to continue with the campaign to help these children during the next league season, when we will double the donation amount to 100 euros per goal”, explains Wieslaw Milkiewicz, Managing Director and Press Spokesman for star
petrol stations.
The cheque was accepted by child oncologist Dr Alexander Claviez, Senior Physician at the Clinic for General Paediatrics, who thanked those involved for their efforts on behalf of the University Medical Centre. The centre plans to use the donation for aids to help the affected children to regain their mobility in a fun, playful way, easing their path back to a normal, healthy life.
